WHAT WE THINK

Vanessa Pye is one of those now ubiquitous thought-leaders who appear to have enough time to spend a lot of it writing self-promoting pieces on Linked In. In this piece she reflects on her own leadership development and the journey she went on to discover how to be the best type of leader.

There are some really telling truths in this piece; particularly about the greatest test of leadership is what happens when you are gone, and that an indispensable leader leads a dependent organisation. To her credit, Pye is not shy of admitting her faults.

What is particularly interesting is her recognition that your leadership style needs to adapt as your role becomes more senior; hence the title “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There”. That once you’ve been noticed as a leader, often the best thing to do is to take a step back and let others step up. There is a useful checklist of common issues that leaders face, and how you can respond differently.
